Mission & History

Kansas Interfaith Power and Light formed in August of 2008 to assist Kansas congregations as they put their faith into action on climate change.

Our Mission Statement:

Kansas Interfaith Power and Light seeks to engage faith communities in environmental stewardship and sustainable practices through the promotion of energy conservation, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. We believe the threat of global climate change calls us to action.

Kansas IPL is one of 37 statewide affiliates of national Interfaith Power & Light and is under the fiscal sponsorship of Ecumenical Christian Ministries of Lawrence, Kansas. We have a 12-person Steering Committee consisting of representatives from many different faith groups from throughout the state, and are staffed by a half-time Coordinator.

Since Kansas IPL’s founding in 2008, we have engaged dozens of congregations in conversations and activities designed to help them address global warming by being better stewards of energy. The campaign has a track record of tangible results: shrinking carbon footprints and educating thousands of people in the pews about the important role of people of faith in addressing this most challenging issue.

We primarily do this by means of the “Climate Covenant.” By signing onto this campaign each congregation has pledged to pursue energy efficiency measures in their sanctuaries, educate their congregants, and incorporate creation stewardship into regular worship services. Thirty congregations have signed the Covenant this far; our member congregations range in size from 50 to 5,000 members and span the state. Both urban and rural congregations are meaningfully engaged – putting their faith into action to address climate change.

In addition, Kansas IPL provides speakers, films, educational resources, and workshops that help churches carry on this conversation internally. We also organize meetings, programs, and other opportunities for people to meet members of other faith communities for mutual support and resource sharing.
