The development of clean energy is having a positive impact on the health of our citizens, and the beauty of our state. We have the ability today to generate a large percentage of our energy from renewable sources, helping to avoid climate disruption and protecting God’s Creation.
One such policy, the federal Production Tax Credit, has helped support the rapid development of the wind industry in Kansas, including thousands of megawatts of new capacity, 2000-3000 jobs, and millions of dollars in tax revenue. It has strong bipartisan support, including from Gov. Brownback and Sen. Moran.
Unfortunately, the PTC is currently in danger – due to expire at the end of the year, challenged the same combination of partisan gamesmanship and fossil fuel industry money that has affected clean energy across the board.
The uncertainty caused by the delay in the PTC’s renewal has already caused the Siemens manufacturing plant in Hutchinson to lay off over 300 workers. We can’t afford to lose this important sector of Kansas’ economy!
That’s why Kansas IPL, the Climate + Energy Project, the Wind Coalition and the Kansas Natural Resource Council have begun a petition campaign to ask Kansas’ congressional representatives to support the renewal of the PTC. Our goal is to gather 5,000 signatures before the election in November.
